to get the msata ssd's to work I had to use the firmware hack you speak of. the downside to using the ssd was battery life was horrible for me, and it generated more heat than any other storage mod i'd tried with my 5.5gen (originally the CF adapter, then ssd, the settled on the quad micro sd) so YMMV

EmCore should now boot up on the iPod and finish installing itself. Select Rockbox and that will start the fallback Rockbox image on EmCore.
